"Look at me! I'm a year old!!"
Matty had a great birthday, celebrating with Lynnie, Grandfather, Aunt Carrie, Uncle Brad and cousins Jack and Grace Anne. We spent most of the day in the pool. Our party was briefly interrupted by a thunderstorm, but it was a nice break from the sun and heat.
"Forget the cupcakes! This suntan lotion looks good!"
Matty LOVED his Mickey cupcake! And he didn't waste any time getting all messy from the frosting.
"What is this?"
"Ok, I'll try it."
"Chocolate!!!"
"Yummy!!"
Matty has spent the last month or two playing hide and seek with us under blankets. (I think I posted a "Where's Matty?" video in a previous blog.) But he loves being under the blanket so much, we figured a tent might be just the ticket for his birthday.
"Cool tent, Mom and Dad."
"Where's Matty?"
It's a 3-part tent with a tunnel that he can climb through, although right now he loves tipping it over.
Matty and Daddy in the tent. No girls allowed.
He also got a cool red Radio Flyer wagon.
A few pictures from his birthday celebration...
My semi-Pinterest success
The past few weeks have been a bit of a blur. I'm heading back to work on Tuesday. I got a job as the Director of Communications with the Paulding County School District. My Uncle William says it was only a matter of time, given all the educators in the family. I'm looking forward to what the new position holds. And they have these things called "holidays" built into the calendar, on top of vacation? I'm not sure what I'll do with all that extra time off!
I have to give a big shoutout to my wonderful husband. I am SO thankful he supported me when I quit my job at CBS46. While it was a necessity, given the hours I was going to be working and the hours that daycares are actually open (the two did not coincide), I'm so grateful that he never pushed me into finding another job. He gave me the opportunity to apply to jobs I was interested in and see what happened. We were both surprised it took a year to find this job, but confident when I got an offer, it would be the "right" job. So, thanks babe...I really appreciate your love and support over the past year. I have enjoyed my time home with our little guy immensely, but can't wait to get back to contributing to the family financially as well.
But back to our little guy...
Matty loves to watch Jeopardy (who knew?) with us. He curls up right between Matt's legs.
The one thing we can't get Matty to do that has surprised me is to wear a hat! We have several hats for him to wear. Swim hats, baseball caps...nope, nothing. He will wear it for a minute and then pull it off and throw it. The refusal to wear a swim hat has me concerned about any trip to the beach because his hair is still SO light! I don't want him to burn. But he looks so cute in hats of all sizes, so any chance I get, I snap a picture.

Let's Go Mets! (No, seriously, let's go Mets...to the clubhouse to figure out how to win)
"Look at me! I'm just like Daddy!"
We have now entered what I am calling the "Danger!" part of Matty's childhood, although I suspect (and fear) it will only get worse. Matty is big enough, and has figured out how, to climb on the sofa. That's all well and good, except he wants to walk on the sofa, and reach from the sofa to the stairs and try to climb on the OUTSIDE of the staircase. Not cool, son. Not cool. He also has decided standing (or sitting) in his little wagon is perfectly safe. I mean, nothing bad could possibly happen with a 1-year-old on an unsteady wagon on wheels. Right??
He has also figured out how to climb into his rocking chair. He rarely sits in it.
But when he does, he's got a page turner.
So, of course, you're looking at our little guy and thinking, he's not so little anymore! You're right!
Here are his stats from his 1-year-old doctor's visit:
Height: 32" (this is up 2.25" since his 9-month well check!) - 99th%
Weight: 21 lbs, 9 oz - 54th%
Head Circumference: 18" - 38th%
Matty's likes: food, any of it, except for avocado. Right now he LOVES blueberries and lil crunchers. He also loves black beans, or kidney beans. We're working on getting him more protein, like chicken, and more veggies. He does well with corn and spinach. Broccoli is hit and miss. And he still loves his mama's milk. :-)
Matty's dislikes: long car rides. He must hate his car seat, especially on any ride longer than 30 minutes. He has an intense hatred of I-285 (who doesn't?). He starts screaming any time we get on the road.
Speaking of long car rides, last weekend we headed up to Columbia to take some family pictures. While we were there, we went to visit our friends at WLTX.
We saw Chaunte (at Darci's desk. Darci was not there.)
J.R. gave Matty his first dollar, which of course went straight into Matty's mouth
J.R. is such a natural with kids. I love it!
We also saw our friends Laura, Tony, Mandi and Sharranda. I love seeing old friends!
As a teaser to our family pictures session, here are a few shots I snapped with my phone:
